There was a time that man sought these out of necessity for shelter or protection. Even today man seeks them out, but for a taste of adventure & mystery and a dose of culture & spirituality. TripAdvisor®, the world’s largest travel site, today announced the list of top cave destinations in India to consider for your next vacation.

  1. Ajanta Caves, Aurangabad (World Heritage Site)
  2. Ellora Caves, Aurangabad (World Heritage Site)
  3. Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka, Bhopal (World Heritage Site)
  4. Badami Cave Temples, Badami
  5. Kanheri Caves, Mumbai
  6. Borra Caves, Visakhapatnam

The top 3 caves Ajanta, Ellora and Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka are also recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage sites and a number of these monuments are protected sites by the Archaelogical Survey of India.

While Maharashtra seems to be rich in caves, these destinations are spread across the country from Kerela to Orissa and Madhya Pradesh to Andhra Pradesh.
